With an estimated worldwide audience of over 2 billion people, the royal wedding is one of the most influential cultural events in a long time. Everyone watched with bated breath to see what Kate Middleton’s wedding gown would look like (gorgeous!), if there would be any mishaps (nope), and how all of the other style details would be done. The excitement over the nuptials of Prince William and Duchess Catherine will undoubtedly inspire many regular brides in their own wedding plans. This is a look at which aspects of the royal wedding are most likely to launch hot new wedding trends.

The most anticipated part of the royal wedding was what dress Kate Middleton would choose to wear. The big reveal did not disappoint! Her elegant wedding gown was designed by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen and it was a gracious style with exquisite lace details. The standout feature of Kate’s gown had to be the sheer lace sleeves. It looks like something may have finally come along to knock the ubiquitous strapless bridal gown off its throne. Expect to see many new wedding gowns designed with long lace sleeves just like Duchess Catherine’s.

Another trend which will surely be inspired by the royal wedding is the return to bridal tiaras. In recent years, brides had been wearing more headbands and feathers, but we can definitely expect to see tiaras return to style with a vengeance. After all, even a regular woman deserves to feel like a princess on her wedding day! Dainty crystal bridal tiaras paired with sparkling drop earrings will be a hot trend for this fall and into next year. The look is glamorous and elegant, befitting a beautiful bride.

There were some other interesting fashion choices made at the royal wedding which may or may not start new trends. As the car ferrying maid of honor Pippa Middleton first came into view, the television commentators were shocked to see that she was wearing a white dress. In the United States, after all, we have a very strong custom that says no woman but the bride should wear white at a wedding. What Americans may not realize, however, is that Kate was breaking with English wedding custom by even having an adult honor attendant (they mostly have lots of children in the bridal party), so the white bridesmaid dress was perhaps less of a shocker. Pippa’s white dress was flawless, and it remains to be seen if brides will take the royal cue and start to outfit their bridesmaids in ethereal white dresses.

One thing which was particularly beautiful about the royal wedding was the decorations used in Westminster Abbey. The tall trees lining the grand church were simply breathtaking. Trees are an excellent way to transform a space, and this is one aspect of the royal wedding which brides would do well to imitate. A row of potted trees along the outside walls are one lovely idea. Another option is to create an enchanted wood or Winter Wonderland design by lining the aisle with a tree canopy. A nice thing about this particular bit of royal wedding inspiration is that it is a bit more subtle than wearing a bridal gown which is modeled directly after Duchess Catherine’s dress.

There are some other parts of the royal wedding which were so distinctly British or royal that they are less likely to become popular wedding trends in America. Chances are we will not see too many wild couture hats in the congregation or that the newlyweds will have a seat after exchanging their vows rather than immediately recessing down the aisle. And it seems safe to assume that most couples will still want to hear “You may now kiss the bride” at the altar, rather than waiting for that special first kiss!
