A Quick Guide To Sunglass Lens Colors

You may think that lens color is just a fashion choice, but for active athletes and people who spend a lot of time outside, having the right color sun glasses can make a significant difference in clarity and contrast. Wearing the correct color sun glasses can significantly improve your vision on days with varying weather conditions. For instance, you wouldn’t wear sunglasses good for playing golf on an overcast day to play tennis on a sunny day. Here are a few guidelines to follow:

Yellow and orange

Yellow and orange tinted sunglasses are good for increasing contrast in low light conditions. This is because they filter green light. Wearing these glasses on a sunny day might overwhelm the eyes. These color glasses are good for cycling, skiing, handball, indoor basketball, racquetball and tennis.
Green glasses slightly increase contrast, but they maintain a good color balance.

Green

Green glasses are best worn for golf. The green lens highlights the turf and allows you to better see the contours of the green and other features of the golf course. These glasses work especially well in low light conditions.

Blue

Blue lenses absorb yellow light, and so they’re good for cutting sunlight to improve visual range. It is best to wear blue sunglasses on bright sunny days.

Rose

Rose colored or red sunglasses also increase contrast, but mostly on sunny days. The downside to rose or red colored sunglasses is that they can cause a notable color imbalance. Cyclists can often be seen sporting these glasses, as can hunters, skiers, snowboarders, and those who play water sports.

Grey

Grey and neutral colored glasses are a favorite since they maintain good color balance while reducing brightness. They aren’t as traditional sun glasses, so you can maintain good visibility while cutting bright light conditions. These glasses are good when you’re going to be outside on a bright sunny day.

Polarized

While not a color, polarized lenses are great for when you’re going to be on the water. Polarized lenses feature a series of verticle lines that are imperceptable to the user. These lines allow only light of one wavelength to pass through, reducing glare and protecting the eyes from harsh bright light conditions. They fight the glare brought on by the sun reflecting off of the water. Polarized sunglasses are good for water sports like boating and fishing.

Amber

Amber glasses also increase contrast on sunny days, and are good for fishing in sandy lake and stream beds. They can also be used in the same sports as rose and red colored glasses. It depends on one’s preference.

As you can see, the color sunglasses you choose can make a big difference. Wearing Yellow sunglasses might be good for cycling on a hazy day but not so good for spending a bright sunny day at the park. So keep this in mind the next time you’re shopping for sunglasses. You can buy different colored lenses for different conditions or you can buy multiple pairs. We prefer this to changing lenses in a single pair of glasses due to the ease of use and the ability to wear different style frames all the time instead of being stuck with one style!
