Tanning Trends: Going for the More Natural Look

Tanning trends have taken a roller coaster ride in the last few years. As celebrities incessantly graced the red carpet with an orange glow, the trend spread. But that orange look is history now, and the natural look is back in. So what does this mean for tanning? If you love your tanning habits, don’t fear.

Despite the fall of the orange tan, in-home tanning beds and tanning salons are not going out of business anytime soon. Tanning is still important for today’s trendy look. It’s just also important to make sure the tan has a natural bronze tone, not an orange one. As Cosmopolitan so wonderfully put it when evaluating Brooke Hogan’s tan, “Sure, tangerine tango is the ‘it’ color of 2012. Just not, you know, for your skin.”

Tanning Tips from Jessica Simpson

For a look at what’s in these days, check out Jessica Simpson’s natural look of bronze tones – not yellow ones. Even though celebrities are sporting a more natural look, like Jessica Simpson, they aren’t abandoning sunless tanning. A golden glow may look natural, but most people need some help from tanning products.

To get a natural glow before heading to the beach this summer, combine some light tanning with name-brand bronzing creams and lotions. Avoid the off brands because if something looks sketchy, it probably is. The last thing you want is to have a splotchy tan, visible lines or a color that looks like it belongs on an Oompa Loompan. Instead, follow Jessica Simpson’s lead by using a light face bronzer to get the trendy natural glow.

Men Can Use Tanning Creams Too

Men, if you’ve made it this far, don’t check out now. Tanning isn’t just for women. Men can benefit from the natural bronze look, too. A healthy glow makes most summer colors look much better against your skin. But again, it’s really important to not overdo it. When using tanning creams, use those especially designed for men. Because men have rougher skin, products designed for men will go on evenly and give your skin tone a warm color that will draw ladies closer than an Axe commercial.

Now is the time to get your tan ready. Don’t wait until your first beach party invitation to frantically grab the first tanning lotion you can find and apply it all over. Warm your skin tone gradually by tanning regularly (but not over tanning!) and using a light application of a bronzer occasionally until your tan has the natural glow you’re looking for. And don’t forget to check out your tan in different lighting – not just your bathroom mirror – to make sure you don’t end up overdoing it!
